30 Years of Jazz
Considered by many to be a “true” jazz festival and a beacon of artistic integrity, The Malta Jazz Festival is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year!

The Malta Jazz Festival is considered by many to be a “true” jazz festival and a beacon of artistic integrity. The very first edition was held in 1991 at Ta’ Liesse in Valletta with a stellar line-up featuring Elvin Jones ‘Jazz Machine’, Michel Petrucciani and Chick Corea Akoustic Band. Charles ‘City’ Gatt, creator of the festival, remained its artistic director till 2005 placing Malta on the international jazz map. The festival underwent a brief hiatus in 2006, returning to its grandeur in 2009 under the curatorship of newly appointed artistic director Sandro Zerafa. Since then the festival has evolved into a 7 day long event, injecting a new dynamic in the local scene through its free masterclasses, mid-day concerts, collaborations between Maltese and international artists, and maintaining levels of excellence in its line-ups. Since its inception the festival has hosted the most important jazz artists, some of which have passed into the annals of jazz history - Elvin Jones, Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, Paul Bley, Lee Konitz, Wayne Shorter, Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Hutcherson, Brad Mehldau, Chick Corea, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Marcus Roberts, John Patitucci, Dave Holland, John Scofield, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kurt Elling, Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride and many many more.
