Sandro Zerafa is one of the most active guitarists on the Paris jazz scene. Born and raised in Malta, Sandro had his first encounter with jazz at the second edition of the Malta Jazz Festival in 1992. After several years of classical guitar studies with Charlotte Smith he pursued music studies at University of Malta and moved to France after graduating in 1997. Graduate of the Lyons Conservatory he is also winner of several awards at La Defense National Jazz Contest in Paris. Sandro is a founder member of the Parisian based jazz musicians' collective and recording label - Paris Jazz Underground.
He has recorded 4 award-winning albums as a leader and 18 albums as a sideman. His latest album « More Light » released on the French label Jazz&People In 2017 has received rave reviews and was labelled « Indispensable » by the journal Jazz News. Sandro currently leads his own band featuring ECM recording artist pianist Yonathan Avishai, bass player Yoni Zelnik and drummer Lukmil Perez. He has performed and recorded with musicians as diverse as Chico Buarque, David Prez, Sergio Krakowski, André Ceccarelli, Francesco Bearzatti, Manu Katché, Youn Sun Nah, Leonardo Montana, Laurent Coq, Stéphane Belmondo amongst others. He has toured extensively in France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, Ireland, Belgium, Brazil, S.Korea, Germany, Poland, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus and Morocco. He has been the artistic director of the Malta Jazz Festival since 2009.
