CONCEPT CREATORS & ILLUSTRATORS
LISA M KÄHLER | SERGIO LAFERLA | AMBER SEYCHELL | FRANCESCA FALZON
The Carnival rebranding project has been carried out in collaboration with 3rd-year students at the Department of Digital Arts within the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences - University of Malta. The project forms part of a study-unit intended to give students the opportunity to work with industry practitioners on real-life projects.
The journey started off with a group brainstorming session surrounded by cats and past carnival posters. We were pondering on a few ideas we had revolving around several historical aspects such as the involvement of several Grandmasters, the involvement of masks and the King of carnival float. Our conversation landed on the idea of using vintage joker cards
as possible reference for a style, and from this emerged the concept of the king card using dual Grandmasters as the two kings.
We quickly set upon assigning roles that play upon our abilities. Sergio took up the great task of painting the portraits of la Vallette
and Lascaris with the expressions of the smiling and frowning theatrical masks. Lisa, being a henna artist, took on the pattern
which would become the main body of the grandmasters and would pull the artwork together. Amber and Francesca worked on the souvenir programme, participant tags, and banners, keeping in mind the pattern and caricatures and finding ways to incorporate them into the designs so as to tie everything together in a cohesive way.
FLOAT SKETCHES ARTIST
Festivals Malta teamed up with Eric Leone to illustrate the sketches submitted by Carnival 2020 participants. The Maltese Carnival always had very high standards and the quality of the work produced keeps growing year in year out. In an effort to raise the bar, Festivals Malta decided to commission an illustrator to give life to the sketches presented by participants ahead of the festival.
Eric Leone is an illustrator and digital artist based in Malta. Ever since he was a little boy, he has been fascinated by historical tales, legends, mythologies and fictional stories. He is filled with awe every time a feature/animated film, book or video game transports him to another realm or era, away from the mundane. Using both traditional and digital media to draw or paint, Eric seeks to share this incessant amazement with his audience through his artworks’ intricate details, powerful visual storytelling, as well as playful and
radiant colour palettes.
