IMPORTANT: Tech rider is to be sent in advance and discussed with technical Lighting technician of specific theatre.  Artists are to use what is available at the said theatre in terms of sound, lights and space and must communicate with the designated festival lighting engineer.  DFM offers the support of front of house staff.  Should there be an issue of specific props that need to be used those need to be discussed and agreed upon in advance.

Open Call for Malta Based Dance Artists and Choreographers

Welcome to the first edition of Dance Festival Malta (DFM) dedicated to connecting artists, disciplines and audiences through art that shares a strong choreographic sensibility hosting dance performances and professional training.  DFM inspires movement as the main language and the body as the main subject. Faced with the numerous challenges that the evolution of dance faces today, it draws the viewer in to a playful exchange of information through the poetic expression of all dance genres. The festival takes place in the capital city of Malta, Valletta, and consists of performances, workshops, creative workshops, community projects, organised panels of discussions, Q & A, and public presentations.

 

DFM invites proposals from Malta-based dance artists. We are interested in receiving proposals for dance performances, works-in-progress, or research performance presentations. The work can involve other disciplines as long as dance and movement are the main focus. We would like to provide a platform that provides the dance community with a space to discuss the challenges of our time through Dance Festival Malta.

As DFM encourages dialogue between movement and diverse forms of dance styles and interdisciplinary dance, from the more traditional to the experimental works.  Artists are encouraged to submit a work to be showcased at Dance Festival Malta relating to any theme or subject. DFM largely addresses the value of artistic content.

Admission Requirements and Conditions

  • Professional solo artists and companies operating in the field of dance performance can apply.  Applicants and participants must be over the age of eighteen (18).

  • All applicants will be informed about the outcome of their submission by 30th April 2022 by email.

The dance pieces will be presented at one of the allocated festivals venues for DFM namely Valletta Campus Theatre, Spazju Kreattiv and Manoel Theatre, with standard general technical support.

  • The shows may be programmed in double or triple bill evenings. We will make every possible effort to guarantee the best technical conditions for the staging of the works, however we may not be able to maintain the same setup/set down/rehearsal times as requested.

  • The artistic direction reserves the right to decide on the order of the shows programmed in the same evening. For shows created for the theatre space: the submitted works must be suitable to be set up on the stage of Valletta Campus Theatre, Spazju Kreattiv, and Manoel theatre. DOWNLOAD THEATRE PLAN 

  • The evolving situation of Covid-19 will require flexibility and works that are suitable to adaptation. If restrictions prevent a live performance, we will work with the artists to find an alternative mode of presentation where possible.

  • In case of selection, the companies and artists selected through this call agree to:
    - stay for the entire duration of the festival in which their show will be programmed;
    - take part in the feedback, dialogue, networking exchanges planned during the festival period.

  • Participants must have all the legal permissions to show the work if this is protected by copyright at their own expense.

  • The selected artists will be given an artist fee according to the following categories:

    • Category 1: Solo (7 minute) Euro 1,000 excluding VAT

    • Category 2:  Duet (10 minutes) Euro 2,300 excluding VAT

    • Category 3: Group of not less than 4 pax (15 minutes) Euro 2,600 excluding VAT

  • Selected applicants need to provide to following marketing material within 2 weeks of acceptance:

    • Hero image of performance (High Resolution)

    • Headshot of each artist (High Resolution)

    • Bio of each artist (200 words max)

    • Brief description of project (150 words)

    • Promotional video if available

    • Social media links

  • Selections will be made by the Artistic Director, the project coordinator, and Festival Manager. The selection criteria take into consideration artistic excellence, technical quality standards, issues related to the world of dance and performance.  We highly encourage exploration of the future of art, questioning issues related to the ethics of collaboration, communication and coexistence including current environmental and socio-political challenges. Dance Festival Malta reserves the right to request an interview (via Zoom etc.) with the candidates.

 

What we offer:

  • Performance against an artistic fee as indicated above.

  • Free entry to all the performances of the festival, excluding workshops, which require a separate application. 

  • Promotion and visibility

  • Performance will be featured in DFM booklets, which will be given out during the festival.
