Notes from the Harbour

Notes From The Harbour is a photography exhibition spanning 29 years of the Malta Jazz Festival. It has been put together specifically for this year so that it will be exhibited online in the absence of this years’s Festival to the Covid-19 outbreak. It features works by five photographers and two painters together with memorabilia and video footage from the fes-tival. The photographers are Joe P Smith, Darrin Zammit Lupi, Patrick Fenech, Pierre Stafrace and Therese Debono. Most of them have been covering the festival since its inception and they have managed to con-nect the embodiment of jazz with the camera’s ability to capture “the moment”. The painters are Jeni Caruana and the late Olaug Vethal. Like the musicians themselves, the participating artists have the art of im-provisation at heart and have created photographs and paintings that capture the raw emotion and the moments of intimacy which unfold on stage. Through compositional skills, perfect timing and spontaneous painting, they have all drawn on their experience and technical exper-tise to make visual statements and bring something of their own to their art.
