Messa Dei Morti

Messa Dei Morti

Programme

The Monteverdi Project

For the solemnity of All Souls Day the Monteverdi Project Present a sung mass in the extraordinary form, on Wednesday 2nd November, at the Jesuits Church, Valletta at 7pm.

Requiem is the first word of the Latin phrase “Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine” which means O Lord give them eternal rest, which refers to the invocation prayer for the deceased (derived from Ezra IV). The requiem mass is the mass for the dead, so called from the first word of its introit.

In music, requiem means the musical composition by which such a mass is accompanied. The requiem mass has nine sections: introit (Requiem), kyrie, gradual, tractus, sequence (Dies irae), offertory, sanctus et benedictus, agnus Dei, and communio (Lux aeterna). As a sacred genre it was practiced since the fifteenth century by almost all composers starting with Palestrina (Missa pro defunctis, 1591) and ending with J. Brahms' Deutsches Requiem (1857-68).

For November 2, 2022, and for the Jesuit Church in Valletta, the Monteverdi Project presents, as was the practice in ancient times, a collage of compositions by different composers belonging mostly to the Roman school, respecting the practice of Alternatim between Polyphony and Gregorian Chant. All the music that will be performed is an expression of the most distinguished composers between the 1500s and 1600s; some pieces, such as the Introit, are performed in their first modern performance.
