The Malta International Arts Festival (MIAF) invites the audience to descend into the fascinating depths of Valletta. This intimate recital by Italian lutenist and baritone Renato Cadel will take place inside a 16th century underground water cistern. The programme includes repertoire from the Italian Renaissance by Vincenzo Capirola (1474 - post 1548) - whose music is preserved in an illuminated manuscript called the Capirola Lutebook and considered to be one of the most important sources of lute music of the early 16th century; Philippe Verdelot (1485 ca. - ante 1552) - considered to be the father of the Italian madrigal and certainly was one of its earliest and most prolific composers; Marco dall’Aquila (1480 ca. - post 1537) - a Venetian lutenist and composer known for musical forms called polyphonic ricercare; Francesco Canova da Milano (1497 – 1543) - heralded throughout Europe as the foremost lute composer of his time. A truly unique concert, enhanced by the evocative setting of the underground site.
