A 4-day workshop resulting in an outdoor performance in Valletta

Project:

‘Space as a cluster’ is an engagement of mass movement and togetherness in interplay with the public sphere. Fifteen performers move through a landscape of chaos and order, resulting in a physical, poetic and political power of a mass assemblage.

Through this work we wish to challenge current and historical forms of social domination, and re-problematise how collectivity can be conceived through collective action and togetherness. We want to create awareness of the potential change that can occur from collective, horizontal, and community based processes: highlighting that multiple narratives and social formations have relevance in the collective body. What is the collective body; in society and public spaces? What impact does it have? How can we belong to something larger than ourselves: not only as individuals, but existing in a collective; an ecosystem?

Workshop description:

In this workshop we will move together, connecting, disconnecting, relating to one another in an open exploration of emergence in constant motion; through movement actions of walking, running, learning and exploring the shifts of weight within the body. We will work as a group, exploring large and small scale-structures and patterns, created through the force of merging and colliding bodies.

Scores written in experimental notation such as graphic symbols and text instructions, will be used as a point of departure for explorations and discussions. The work will be developed from research-based “open form scores” encouraging a multitude of interpretations, informed by theories of swarm intelligence, emergent behaviour, chaos theory and self-organization. The workshop will result in an outdoor public performance in Valletta.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for up to 15 movers (Aged 16+) from all backgrounds to join this workshop project. Individuals should have experience in dance and/or movement and be open to delve into a process of exploration and experimentation.

Dates/Times:

The workshops will take place 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st July from 13:00-17:00. Attendance at all workshop days is mandatory. The outdoor performance will be held on the last day, 31st of July at 19.00 in Freedom Square, City Gate Valletta.

Location for creative process: Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta.
