Call for Submission for an Artistic Director for Dance Festival Malta

Festivals Malta is looking for a creative and innovative professional to take on the role of Artistic Director for Dance Festival Malta. The Artistic Director has the overall responsibility for the artistic management of the festival and for the development and implementation of its artistic output. The Artistic Director will collaborate closely with the Festivals Malta CEO and the Festival Manager and will report to the Festivals Malta CEO. The chosen Artistic Director will need to provide artistic direction for a period of three years (2023-2025).


Dance Festival Malta


Dance Festival Malta is a multi-disciplinary festival that strives to cultivate a dance eco-system in Malta by providing dance students and professionals with a platform for intense training and professional development. Spread over four days in July the festival will host a series of workshops, masterclasses and performances that welcome the richness of the universal language of dance cultures, featuring international artists and choreographers. Through this varied programme, audiences and participants can be part of a unique festival that not only celebrates movement but aims to be a reference point where dancers forge links with the global dance community. Dance Festival Malta represents a re-examination of how we look at dance inviting you to share in a world of passion, movement and connection in Malta.


Role Summary


The Artistic Director shall:

  1. Devise, plan and supervise the execution of the festival and related activities in the name of Festivals Malta.

  2. Develop and strengthen the local dance sector through opportunities created by the festival.

  3. Coordinate with performers and artists so as to attain the best possible productions and do the utmost to attract considerable audiences in pursuit of strategies designed for audience development.

  4. Research, workshop, design and engage local and international material and talent following best practices policies and cutting-edge creative initiatives towards the staging of an event of international standards.

  5. Re-dimension the festival to current needs and programme according to market needs.

  6. Choose the artistic content for the festival.

  7. Focus on the development of local artistic talent.

  8. Work closely with the marketing department in terms of communications, public relations and social media.

  9. Be in line with Arts Council Malta and Festivals Malta’s policies.

  10. Collaborate with other PCO’s and other cultural agencies / entities.

  11. Adhere to public procurement policies.

  12. Adhere to deadlines set by the Agency.

  13. Attending and supervising scheduled rehearsals and performances of the production.

  14. Be required to publicly speak about the festival.

  15. Devote whatever time may be necessary for the success of the festival.

  16. Be in Malta at least 3 weeks before and during the duration of the festival.

  17. Respect set budgets and work with the established time frames.

  18. Report to Festivals Malta’s CEO.

  19. Perform any other related duties as assigned by Festivals Malta CEO.


Selection Criteria


Applicants must be able to provide an overall artistic vision and develop the festival to fulfil its mission and vision whilst striving for quality and excellence. Applicants should have a proven track record of their work, be purposeful and motivated, and must possess excellent communication skills. S/he will be required to make use of his/her existing resources and networks to attract local and international interest in the festival.



Skills and Experience Required


The Candidates must have a proven track record in the following:

  1. Budgeting skills.

  2. Understanding of logistical and production requirements and costs.

  3. Networking with local and international dance artists, dance companies and artistic management companies.

  4. Strong communication skills.

  5. Strong organisational skills.

  6. Demonstrate experience in working on high profile cultural events, productions, and festivals.

  7. Have experience with idea generation and delivery of projects from conception to completion.

  8. Have experience in managing multiple projects.

  9. Have experience in event management.

  10. Have knowledge of the local industry and cultural sector.

  11. Understand and communicate with the official language/s of Malta.

Preference will be given to professionals with broad experience in the field of the arts, particularly those who have participated in events of international prestige and who are ready to continue developing our festival according to the related strategic plans. Accountability and knowledge of working with public funds will be considered an asset.

Interested individuals should send a detailed portfolio highlighting their artistic track record, together with a letter expressing their motivation and desire to be an Artistic Director, the strengths they would bring to the position and the goals they would like to achieve if they are chosen to perform the duties of Artistic Director for a specific festival.


The selected applicant must be registered with the VAT Department.

Submissions will be received via email to hr.fm@festivals.mt by not later than Friday 16th September at noon quoting in the subject the reference number FM2022/003-003 and the submission name ‘Application for Artistic Director for Dance Festival Malta’.

Id-Direttur Artistiku se jkun responsabbli b’mod ġenerali għall-immaniġġjar artistiku tal-festival, u biex jiżviluppa u jimplimenta l-produzzjoni artistika tiegħu. Id-Direttur Artistiku se jikkollabora mill-qrib mal- Kap Eżekuttiv ta’ Festivals Malta u mal-Maniġer tal-Festival, u se jirrapporta lill- Kap Eżekuttiv ta’ Festivals Malta. Organizzat fuq erbat ijiem f’Lulju, il-festival se jtella’ numru ta’ workshops, masterclasses u rappreżentazzjonijiet li jilqgħu r-rikkezza tal-lingwa universali tal-kulturi taż-żfin, u li se jinvolvu artisti u koreografi internazzjonali. Permezz ta’ dan il-programm varjat, l-udjenzi u l-parteċipanti jistgħu jkunu parti minn festival uniku li mhux biss jiċċelebra l-moviment, iżda li jimmira li jkun punt ta’ referenza fejn iż-żeffiena jiffurmaw konnessjonijiet mal-komunità taż-żfin dinjija. Dance Festival Malta jirrappreżenta mod uniku ta’ kif naraw iż-żfin, u jistiednek tipparteċipa f’dinja ta’ passjoni, moviment u networking f’Malta.

Id-Direttur Artistiku għandu:

  1. Ifassal, jippjana u jissorvelja t-twettiq tal-festival u ta’ attivitajiet relatati f’isem Festivals Malta.

  2. Jiżviluppa u jsaħħaħ il-qasam taż-żfin lokali permezz ta’ opportunitajiet maħluqa mill-festival.

  3. Jikkoordina mal-parteċipanti u mal-artisti sabiex jittellgħu l-aħjar produzzjonijiet possibbli u jagħmel l-almu tiegħu biex jattira udjenzi konsiderevoli permezz ta’ strateġiji mfassla għall-iżvilupp tal-udjenza.

  4. Jirriċerka, jorganizza workshops, jiddisinja u jinvolvi materjal u talent lokali u internazzjonali skont il-politika tal-aħjar prassi u inizjattivi kreattivi mill-aktar moderni u avvanzati ħalli jittella’ avveniment ta’ standard internazzjonali.

  5. Jagħti direzzjoni ġdida lill-festival abbażi tal-ħtiġijiet attwali u jfassal il-programm skont il-ħtiġijiet tas-suq.

  6. Jagħżel il-kontenut artistiku għall-festival.

  7. Jiffoka fuq l-iżvilupp tat-talent artistiku lokali.

  8. Jaħdem mill-qrib mad-dipartiment tal-marketing fuq il-komunikazzjonijiet, ir-relazzjonijiet pubbliċi u l-midja soċjali.

  9. Josserva l-politika tal-Kunsill Malti għall-Arti u ta’ Festivals Malta.

  10. Jikkollabora ma’ Organizzazzjonijiet Kulturali Pubbliċi (PCOs) u aġenziji/entitajiet kulturali oħrajn.

  11. Josserva l-politika tal-akkwist pubbliku.

  12. Josserva l-iskadenzi tal-Aġenzija.

  13. Jattendi u jissorvelja l-provi skedati u s-serati tal-produzzjoni.

  14. Jitkellem fil-pubbliku dwar il-festival.

  15. Jiddevota l-ħin kollu meħtieġ biex il-festival jirnexxi.

  16. Ikun Malta mill-inqas 3 ġimgħat qabel il-festival u matulu.

  17. Iżomm mal-baġits allokati u mal-iskadenzi stabbiliti.

  18. Jirrapporta lill-Kap Eżekuttiv ta’ Festivals Malta.

  19. Jaqdi kull dmir relatat ieħor li jassenjalu l-Uffiċjali Kap Eżekuttiv ta’ Festivals Malta.


Il-Kriterji tal-Għażla


L-applikanti għandhom ikunu jistgħu jipprovdu viżjoni artistika ġenerali u jiżviluppaw il-festival biex iwettqu l-missjoni u l-viżjoni tiegħu filwaqt li jistinkaw għall-kwalità u l-eċċellenza. L-applikanti għandu jkollhom rekord ippruvat tax-xogħol tagħhom, ikunu determinati u motivati, u jkollhom ħiliet ta’ komunikazzjoni eċċellenti. Se jkunu meħtieġa jagħmlu użu mir-riżorsi u n-networks eżistenti tagħhom biex jattiraw interess lokali u internazzjonali fil-festival.

L-applikant magħżul għandu jkun irreġistrati mad-Dipartiment tal-VAT.
