Il-Ministru għall-Wirt Nazzjonali, l-Arti u l-Gvern Lokali, Hon. José Herrera sostna li “l-Karnival huwa wieħed mill-pilastri ewlenin fil-kalendarju kulturali Malti. Wieħed ma’ setgħax ma jħossx in-nuqqas tal-Karnival u t-talent tal-entużjasti u tad-dilettanti illi jagħtu il-maġġoranza tal-ħin tagħhom fil-preparazzjoni għal dan l-avveniment, li fiħ jiġbor numru ta’ talenti u ħiliet differenti. Tul l-aħħar snin, waqt il-pandemija, l-Gvern ħa deċiżjonijiet responsabbli, u b’kawtela organizza attivitajiet li xorta fakkru dawn il-jiem tant sbieħ. Imma konxjament nafu li dak li ġie mħejji qatt ma seta’ jikkompara mal-karnival tradizzjonali Malti li għalih jikkonkorru eluf ta’ Maltin u Għawdxin u kif ukoll barranin li jżuru lill-pajjiżna apposta għal dan l-avveniment. Ġaladarba issa jidher li ser ikun hemm reviżjoni fil-miżuri, hekk kif tħabbar ftit tal-jiem ilu, flimkien ma’ Festivals Malta ser jiġi mħejji programm kulturali karnivalesk, li għal din is-sena biss ser jittella’ fl-20, 21, 22 ta’ Mejju 2022, biex b’hekk il-poplu Malti u Għawdxi jkun jista jgawdi dan l-avveniment li hu tant għal qalb il-kbar u ż-żgħar, b’mod responsabbli mal-miżuri relevanti f’dawk iż-żminijiet.”

Għalkemm il-format tal-Karnival kellu jinbidel minħabba s-sitwazzjoni preżenti, Festivals Malta xorta waħda ħadem biex l-ispirtu tal-karnival jibqa’ jinħass minkejja l-isfidi li din il-pandemija ġabet magħha”, ikkonkludiet is-Sa. PR310122 - Festivals Malta Launches Il-Karnival ta’ Malta 2022 Programme.

Festivals Malta announced that Il-Karnival ta’ Malta will once more be held through an abridged programme between the 25th February and 1st March 2022.

The Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government Hon. José Herrera said that, “Carnival is one of the main pillars of Malta’s cultural calendar. One cannot help but feel the absence of Carnival festivities and the talent it inspires through the enthusiasts who dedicate most of their lives for its preparation. Throughout the pandemic, the government has made responsible decisions and carefully organised various initiatives that add value to the Maltese cultural calendar. However, we know that what has been organised can never compare to the traditional carnival that is celebrated by thousands of Maltese citizens as well as tourists who visit our islands especially for this event. Given that, as announced a few days ago, the current Covid-19 measures will be revised, the government together with Festivals Malta will organise a carnivalesque cultural programme that for this year only, will be held on the 20th, 21st and 22nd May. Through this initiative the Carnival community can safely enjoy these highly anticipated festivities.”

Nevertheless, Festivals Malta announced that some carnival activities will still take place during the month of February, through a reduced programme that follows the current Covid-19 measures.

“Il-Karnival ta’ Malta is an important event in Malta’s cultural calendar and Festivals Malta has been constantly striving to return carnival celebrations back to their former glory”, explained Annabelle Stivala, Festivals Malta CEO.

“Throughout the years, Festivals Malta has made it its mission to preserve the traditions and customs associated with Maltese Carnival, while also elevating it as a quality festival. While the festival’s format had to be adapted due to the current situation, Festivals Malta has endeavoured to keep the carnival spirit alive despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic”, concluded, Ms Stivala.

Festivals Malta Chairman, Norman Hamilton, commented on Carnival’s significant historical heritage and the constant investment and opportunities Festivals Malta is providing for artists within different artistic sectors. “Festivals Malta takes pride in investing in local artists through various initiatives, such as the Carnival workshop held last summer and other initiatives such as the I.COM Project and much more”, concluded Mr Hamilton.

Il-Karnival ta’ Malta Artistic Director Jason Busuttil explained that this year’s programme will include various competitive installations throughout the streets of Valletta between the 25th and 1st March, a photographic exhibition by German photographer Frank Kirchner, curated by Antoine Farrugia, a costumes exhibition featuring works from the past years and a live production of Il-Qarċilla, all in collaboration with Spazju Kreattiv. The Manoel Theatre, in collaboration with the TOI TOI Collective, will also produce a live theatrical show which includes dance, projections and other activities suitable for children, which is being supported by Festivals Malta.

Il-Karnival ta’ Malta is organised by Festivals Malta, in collaboration with Spazju Kreattiv and supported by Kinnie and Mapfre MSV Life. For more information about this year’s programme visit www.festivals.mt.
